Hydropeaking

Artificially generated flood events (hydropeaking) due to hydropower operations are common in order to meet the peak electricity demand. Hydropeaking is a disturbance in both the hydrological and ecological sense, and can have grave consequences for the aquatic ecosystem downstream of a hydropower plant. With the help of habitat models, it is possible that the danger (eg stranding of juvenile fish) can be qualitatively and quantitatively estimated and located, allowing for the identification of critical phases and areas impacted by hydropower operations.
